Eagles Nest News

WM Irvin Elementary

🦅 ✨ Soaring Through a December to Remember!💙

Another amazing week is in the books at Irvin Elementary as we get closer to Winter Break! Last week, we were thrilled to celebrate so many students with positive referrals—Way to go, Eagles! You truly know how to SOAR!

Our 3rd–5th-grade students also wrapped up their Reading and Science Benchmarks. We will finish Benchmark testing this Tuesday with Math. If your child missed a Benchmark, no worries—they’ll have make-up opportunities through Friday.

This week, our Kindergarten–3rd-grade students will begin their Middle-of-the-Year DIBELS assessments. Attendance is especially important so teachers can see the growth your child has made and plan next steps for success.

We’re also gearing up for our PBIS & Encore Celebrations next week! Students are working hard to earn their signatures and Gold Cards. Parents, thank you for continuing to encourage your child to SOAR each day.

Students in grades 2–5 are completing Module 2 of Arts & Letters. Our second graders even had a special visit from UNCC Professor Cerise GM, who shared how the American West changed over time—right here in North Carolina! Be sure to check out the Tips for Families flyers below to help your child review vocabulary and key topics from this module.

And don’t forget—this week brings the much-anticipated PTO event: Parent’s Night Out! Find details and the registration link in the PTO section below. We can’t wait to spend time with our Eagles while you enjoy some uninterrupted holiday shopping or a relaxing evening out on Friday, December 12th 3-6:30 pm

A Word from Our SROs
Parents, please remember to come to a full stop at the two stop signs before entering the car line. Your cooperation helps keep all of our students, staff, and families safe.

It’s hard to believe the holidays are right around the corner! I’m sharing some holiday resources for families who may want to take advantage of community support opportunities this season.
If there’s ever anything I can assist with, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

As always, if there is anything we can do to support your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Arts & Letters!!

Our students have successfully completed Module 1 of Arts and Letters, and we’re ready to jump right into Module 2 with fresh topics and new learning adventures! Please take a look at the Tips for Families below, to see the topics and vocabulary your child will be learning.

To keep the learning going beyond the classroom, here are some grade-level tips for families to support and extend learning at home:

STEM News:

Our students have been busy exploring creativity and problem-solving through hands-on STEM experiences this month! Second grade enjoyed a special guest speaker as part of their Arts and Letters unit on Westward Expansion, helping students connect what they are learning to local history. In STEM Encore, students are taking on a festive series of snowman-themed engineering challenges—designing and building snowmen with limited materials or figuring out how to make their snowman creations stand tall. We’re so proud of their curiosity, teamwork, and growing confidence as young engineers!

Fifth-grade families! Don’t forget about the CCS Program Choice opportunities for next school year! Click here to apply before December 14th!

Positivity Project (P2) - OPM: Supporting Others When They Struggle

Dear Families,

This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.

To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!
