Curriculum

Arts & Letters Logo

Arts & Letters!!

In Module 3 of Arts & Letters, students in grades 2–5 are building strong reading, writing, and thinking skills by exploring meaningful texts and sharing their ideas about what they read.
Throughout the module, students:
  • Read engaging stories and informational texts
  • Talk about characters, ideas, and important details
  • Practice using evidence from the text to explain their thinking
  • Learn new vocabulary and strengthen reading comprehension
Across the three units, students grow more confident in:
  • Understanding grade-level texts
  • Sharing ideas during class discussions
  • Writing clear responses about what they read
By the end of Module 3, students are better prepared to think critically, express their ideas clearly, and connect what they read to the world around them. These skills help set the foundation for future learning across all subjects.

To keep the learning going beyond the classroom, here are some grade-level tips for families to support and extend learning at home:

Lights STEM Action Night
Thursday night’s Lights STEM Action Night was a huge success! Families enjoyed an exciting evening filled with music performances, STEP performances, a student art show, and hands-on superhero-themed STEM stations. Students and families worked together to make their superheroes fly around the city using magnets, light up the city with electricity, create anemometers, build noisemakers, design cars, and construct marble runs. It was wonderful to see so much creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration throughout the night. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and support our students!

1Can
Thank you for donating cans for our project! Our 3rd-grade representatives are currently hard at work creating their canned food sculpture using our donated food items in the guidance room! All of the canned food sculptures at participating CCS STEM Schools will be judged on Tuesday, and afterward, all collected food will be donated to 1Can to support individuals and families in need within our community. This project not only highlights students’ creativity but also reinforces the importance of service and giving back.

Positivity Project (P2) - Humor

Dear Families,

This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Humor. Humor means enjoying laughter and bringing smiles to others.

Humor helps us see the lighter side of things, making tough times easier and more fun. It doesn't mean you have to tell jokes, but people with humor often notice the funny moments in life and share them with others. Humor can lift people's spirits and help them through challenges. It’s important to help students understand how to use humor in a kind way, to lift others up, and never at someone else's expense.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humor at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.

Thank you for your support!

Counselors Corner

Happy National Counselors Week

💙Our Counselors Say...💙

Dear Irvin Families,

As school counselors we want to take a moment to share how we support students through age-appropriate learning.

In support of student safety and wellness, the W.M. Irvin Student Services team will be teaching a classroom lesson that focuses on touch safety and child sexual abuse prevention. Across CCS schools, “A Child’s Choice,” which focuses on establishing safe boundaries and healthy responses, will be taught in 1st, 3rd and 5th grades. A letter containing additional information, opt-out procedures, will be sent home with your child.

If you would like to come in for additional information, we will hold an information session for parents on March 25th at 7:45am and a Spanish information session on March 26th at 7:45am. If you are unable to make the information sessions but have additional questions, please reach out to our school social worker at hayley.randle@cabarrus.k12.nc.us.
